The Zimbabwe Olympic Academy (ZOA) is an arm of the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) which draws its ideals, aims and values from both the International Olympic Academy (IOA) and ZOC. Its main mandate is to promote the spread of Olympism and provide Olympic education in Zimbabwe. The current Director of ZOA is Eugenia Chidhakwa.

The Academy was established in 2002. As an arm of ZOC, it also derives its vision and mission from the mother organization. It thrives to fulfill the aims of ZOC and in order to do this, it attempts to satisfy the following objectives:

• To promote the spread of Olympism
• To provide Olympic education
• To encourage and be involved in research
• To attend and make presentations at conferences
• To produce materials such as books, films, cards etc

ZOA Philosophy
Our philosophy is in the following four categories

1. Build a Strong Foundation
2. Spread Olympism Like Wildfire
3. Get All On Board
4. Unity For The Multi-cultural Society


Role of The Academy

The role of the Academy is to do the following:

• Work towards the total achievement of the aims and objectives of IOA and ZOC as well as its own, in matters relevant to itself
• Spearhead, facilitate and provide Olympic Education as well as ensure the spread of Olympism
• Facilitate and provide education of the values and ideas of the Olympic Movement
• Ensure the positive impact of the above on the totality of humankind in Zimbabwe

Goals

In pursuit and support of the vision of the IOA and ZOC, the goal of ZOA is to become the strongest and most effective vehicle for Olympic education and the spread of Olympism in Zimbabwe.
By 2010, ZOA hopes to have done the following:

• Promoted Olympism to 40% of the population of Zimbabwe
• Ensured Olympic Education to 40% of the same
• Participate actively in at least one conference per year
• Developed and produced a sizable amount of literature and publications
• Contributed substantially to the achievement of 60% ZOC stakeholder satisfaction

Strategies

• Organize educational workshops, seminars and conferences
• Make presentations
• Encourage presentation and publication of articles and papers
• Develop a library, museum and regional centers
• Attend annual sessions for Directors of NOAs and other relevant events
• Hold meetings, document and circulate minutes appropriately
• Work with already established institutions
• Organize and produce promotional and educative materials
• Create with the help of ZOC partnerships with stakeholders
• Organize Olympic Academy Sessions for various groups of stakeholders

Drivers

• Spreading the values of Olympism
• Facilitating the provision of Olympic Education
• Research and publication

In order to achieve its objectives, the Academy

• found it ideal to work with national sport associations, schools, tertiary institutions and the public in general
• is interested in all groups of people involved in sport such as athletes, spectators, officials, coaches, sponsors, parents, guardians etc and all at all levels

§ Fair- Play should be everyone’s priority

FAIR PLAY IS

· More than a concept
· The foundation that sport relies on
· A system that can be used successfully in sport and in schooling
· A philosophy that can be used to teach youths to take responsibility and to show respect.

§ Sticking to agreed rules
§ Not using unfair advantages
§ Equal opportunities
§ Considerate bahaviour
§ Respect for the opponent
§ Acceptance of others
§ Fair-Play offers opportunities that
can be understood for finding one's way
in a very competitive world

FAIR-PLAY AIMS TO

· Help athletes to develop a positive self image
· Promote respect for the rules
· Promote respect for officials and their decisions to promote respect for opponents
· Encourage a constructive attitude towards competition
· Develop a sense of dignity under all circumstances
· Provide an equal opportunity to learn skills
· Encourage individuals to continue their participation in sport
· Promote friendship
· Promote care for others
· Promote integration
· Ensure joy from participation in sport
· Create a feeling of togetherness

FAIR PLAY BEHAVIOUR

§ Demonstrate respect for all individuals
§ Respect the facility in which you participate
§ Share equipment, space and facilities
willingly
§ Maintain self control at all times
§ Condemn violence and harassment of
all forms
§ Always attempt to contribute to the
betterment of the festival /tournament

o Compete to the best of one's ability within the limits of the rules
o Spectators maintain a supportive atmosphere that positively motivates players, officials and other spectators
o Officials make sure that every player has a reasonable opportunity to perform to the best of his or her ability within the limits of the rules.
o Coaches /captains must act as team leaders to encourage, motivate and assist in developing players to achieve their maximum potential
o Following all the rules
o Never seeking to deliberately break a rule

o Refuse to win by cheating
o Respecting the officials - not yelling at them
o Not harassing officials
o Demonstrating self control
o Recognizing good performances by the opponent
o Ensuring that your team does not verbally abuse opponents
o To get the best out of you, you need your opponents to play his/her best too

TO PROMOTE FAIR PLAY, OFFICIALS CAN

Ø Provide emotional support
Ø Provide opportunities for children to achieve their goals
Ø Provide opportunities for children to have fun
Ø Allow children to participate with their friends

Ø Emphasize skill development rather than winning
Ø Put children’s interests and motives ahead of their own
Ø Modify equipment, rules and facilities to suit children’s needs
Ø Show self control
Ø Value contributions that each child makes
Ø Be fair to all children
Ø Teach fair play and practice fair play
Ø Allow children to participate equally
Ø Find out from your children how they would like you to act on the sideline
