The Zimbabwe Olympic Committee (ZOC) is an umbrella sports organisation whose main objective is to develop and protect the Olympic Movement in Zimbabwe in accordance with the Olympic Charter. ZOC has 30 National Sports Associations affiliated to it on a voluntary basis. It is governed by a constitution and the General Assembly which meets annually is the highest decision making organ of ZOC. In between General Assemblies, the Executive Board takes charge of ZOC business. The Board is elected every four years in the year following the Olympic Games. However, the constitution has a provision for co-option of Board Members to address anomalies in representation. The Commissions are appointed by the Board to ensure effective discharge of the Board’s responsibilities and currently 11 ZOC Commissions are in place and functioning effectively. ZOC also has a Secretariat of just 6 full-time staff members headed by the Chief Executive Officer/Secretary General, but like many other sporting organizations in Zimbabwe, benefits considerably from the involvement of volunteers.

    “To adopt and implement the World Anti-Doping Code”



    “To preserve its autonomy as defined in the Olympic Charter.



    “To protect the Olympic Symbols in Zimbabwe from commercial and any other abuse”



PARTNERSHIP   “To cooperate with and achieve harmonious relations with government bodies in order to achieve its mission”



FACILITATION   “To select and designate the city which may apply to organize Olympic Games in Zimbabwe”



     
     

 


WHAT IS THE OLYMPIC MOVEMENT
The Olympic Movement includes the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Organizing Committees of the Olympic Games (OCOGs), the National Olympic Committees (NOCs), the International Federations (IFs), the national associations, clubs and of course the athletes, officials, spectators and all who subscribe to the ideals of Olympism.


The Olympic symbols are:

The rings – blue, yellow, red, black and green interlaced from left to right symbolize the union of the 5 continents and the meeting of athletes from all over the world at the games
The flag
The motto – “Citius. Altius. Fortius “ inviting all athletes to excel in accordance with the Olympic spirit – Higher Stronger Faster
The Anthem
The Olympic Torch and Flame – kindled in Olympia

DEFINED THROUGH ITS NUMEROUS ACTIVITIES THE OLYMPIC MOVEMENT INVOLVES:

· Co-operation with public and private organizations to place sport at the service of mankind
· Assistance to develop “Sport for All”
· Advancement of women in sport at all levels and in all structures
· The fight against doping
· Promoting sport ethics and fair play
· Raising awareness of environmental problems
· Financial and educational support for developing countries through Olympic Solidarity
· Working with strategic partners such as
o Court of Arbitration for Sport – CAS
o International Committee for Fair Play – CIFP
o International Paralympic Committee – IPC
o World Anti-Doping Agency – WADA
o World Olympians Association – WOA
plus numerous others in various activities.

MARKETING AND REVENUE

The Olympic marketing programme has become the driving force behind the promotion, the financial security and stability of the Olympic Movement. Revenue is generated from television broadcast partnership, corporate partnership, Olympic games ticketing and Olympic licensing.

The Olympic Movement receives most of its funding from the Olympic games rights bought by broadcast networks. It also benefits from the Olympic Partners (TOP) worldwide sponsorship programme comprising the following multinational companies:

OLYMPIC MARKETING REVENUE DISTRIBUTION

ZOC – receives funds for training and development athletes, technical and administrative personnel, and sending teams to the Games and other high performance competitions, which are often considered as preparations for the Games i.e. Commonwealth and All Africa Games.

Depending on the courses applied for, which are subject to approval, ZOC can receive anything up to US$200 000.00 in grants in a year. OS is the arm of the IOC, which administers a share of the broadcast revenue, redistributing it to the NOCs in order to help them develop sports in their countries.
